One Thing you can't do in Michigan in February

A good friend of mine and his wife (also a great friend) told me once or twice about a book called One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven.

Well, as a spin-off on that, here's a short list of things you can't do in Michigan in Febraury:

  • Have a barbecue
  • Cut your grass
  • Go to the Water Park
  • Go fishing from a boat
  • Go Para-sailing, water-skiing, or feel the sand between your toes at the beach (it's frozen solid)
  • Buy a SNOW SHOVEL
That's right, it is nearly impossible to buy a snow shovel in Michigan in FEBRUARY!

Last week, my car was stuck. When I say stuck, I mean STUCK.

Oh, by the way, it was stuck in the driveway. I tried to get it out for an hour and was unsuccessful. I was successful, however, in breaking my snow shovel. That initiated my search for a new snow shovel. I was willing to pay 20 or 30 bucks just to get a good one with a metal edge.

Checked Sam's Club - Nope.
Checked Wal-Mart - yes, but only one, and it was really really cheap and flimsy. Not good at all for a foot of packed-down snow.
Checked Lowes - Nope.
Checked K-Mart - Nope.

Argh!!!!

So finally I got one. Good ol' Meijer came through for me. Thank goodness for a Michigan-based company who has the brains to look outside and see that there just MIGHT be a need for snow shovels in February. And, as a bonus, they are on clearance for 50% off!

I can finally get into my driveway again, after about an hour and a half of shoveling last night. Not fun. At least I got to enjoy the snow over the weekend on Snowmobiles at my in-laws :) I just had to pay for it last night, lol.

EGAD MAN!!! You dug that out with a SHOVEL!!! Oh, wait - you're YOUNG! I keep forgetting that! ;) :)

Seriously though - I feel your pain...around the same time, I was on a search for rock salt. As soon as we entered a certain Michigan based store that shall remain unnamed - I asked the first clerk/store associate/team member (Or WHATEVER the current pc term is) - where I might find rock salt. She quickly responded that they had NONE in the entire store - except some jug of ice melt or something...so we grabbed 2 jugs of it & proceeded to pick up a few other essentials to make it through this grizzly winter...and LOW AND BEHOLD - what do we find on the other side of the store?!?! An overflowing pallet of ROCK SALT!!! And a few scattered jugs of ice melt that previous probably aggitated consumers left behind. :) :)

So - I got my rock salt.

Glad you found a shovel. BTW - we had an extra one...next time you should call one of us. :) ;)

Yeah, the shoveling wasn't fun. Then I shoveled last night at 9:30p, got up this morning and it looked like I hadn't even shoveled last night! Yikes!

I think it's time for a "things you don't think about when you live somewhere warm" post. Like Frozen shut car doors and running over (what you think is) slush with your car.

I would disagree on that first one - we had carne asada at a friend's house last Saturday and then grilled steaks at our house on Sunday! Of course we probably have a little less snow then you. I know G.R. gets hit pretty bad.

Hey! Thanks for stopping by my blog :)

My sister lives in Holland Michigan and I always laugh at her since I live in North Carolina where it rarely if ever snows :)

But hey, you enjoy that shovel - I'm sure you'll use it alot more before the winter season is over ;)

Wow EC, I guess that six degrees of separation stuff really is true. I travel to Holland on a regular basis. Very cool!
